The pearls of pain

The pearl is considered a precious gem that can only be produced in nature. Man as not found a way to make anything that comes close to the real thing. A pearl is naturally formed inside an oyster or living shelled mollusk. It usually happens when a grain of sand gets into the soft tissue of the mollusk which causes discomfort to the host. Over a period of years a pearl will be formed out of the pain.

Running as been a way for me to deal with the stresses of life and get rid of lots of junk on the road. It has become my prayer time. Over the last 5 years I have never had a time during a run the headache has gotten worse. As I was out this morning I could feel the migraine start to intensify with every step. The word grain kept coming to my mind. I realized that a pearl only comes from pain. Since June 2009 this pain has changed me. Helen Keller said, “I thank God for my handicaps, for through them I have found myself, my work, and God.” I too thank God for this pain, for it has brought me to a new place in my faith.

Each of us deal with pain in our lives whether we recognize it or not. Mental, spiritual, emotional and physical pain exist in all our lives to some degree. For the physical pain I deal with it has become a gift that I do not wish on anyone. I am finding who I am and who God wants me to be.

As I ran, each stride brought more pain and yet freedom. I began to sing and worship in the midst of this onslaught. The last half-mile was full of tears of pain and joy. Only in the presence of God can one experience pure joy in absolute pain. Blessed be Your name!
